After the sell-out success of our first collaboration in 2023, we’re excited to team up again with renowned designer and artist Sabine Marcelis for the release of our second limited edition collectable, the Studio Sabine Marcelis x Mathmos Astro Lava Lamp. Available exclusively from Mathmos websites, this special edition is strictly limited to just 1,000 pieces worldwide.

This exclusive design, created specifically for Sabine’s installation at the VitraHaus Loft in Bern, Switzerland, showcases Marcelis’s signature approach to colour and form. The deep Bordeaux red brings warmth and vibrancy to the sleek, iconic Astro silhouette, a colour handpicked by Marcelis for the burgundy-toned bedroom in the VitraHaus Loft. Our final limited edition 60th birthday Astro lava lamp is with multi-disciplinary designer Camille Walala. She is known for her ambitious, large-scale, and explosively colourful interventions in public spaces and designs for interiors, products, buildings, sculpture, and fashion. Camille has chosen bestselling colourways, violet and red for the lava and matt black for the base and cap. Bold, etched lines into the black aluminium add a monochrome pattern to the classic form with the Walala logo on top of the cap. More about Camille Walala here.

Our fourth limited edition 60th birthday Astro lava lamp is with renowned British photographer, publisher and film director Rankin. Rankin has chosen a blue version of our Astro Vinyl with his name and the words “LET THERE BE LIGHT” etched on the cap. The lava is aquamarine and blue, and a Rankin photograph of the lava features on the box. Rankin became known for his portraiture of bands, artists, supermodels and politicians, having photographed everyone from the Queen of England to the Queen of Pop. Through RANKIN Creative, he is best known for work that is on the cultural cusp and leading future trends: producing rule-breaking campaigns for brands and shooting music videos for the likes of Miley Cyrus, Rita Ora and Kelis. In celebration of Mathmos’ 60th anniversary, we have collaborated with global music legends Duran Duran to design a limited edition of our classic Astro lava lamp. This limited edition of only 600 worldwide has a sleek silver metallic silhouette when turned off and is transformed when switched on; the constantly changing pink lava magically glows through the metallised glass. We have etched the signatures of each of the four band members into the cap and one of Duran Duran’s early logos into the base. Duran Duran and Mathmos are a great fit as both take their names from the cult 1960s film Barbarella, and there is a track, “Lava Lamp”, on Duran Duran’s “Pop Trash” album.

In celebration of Mathmos’ 60th anniversary, Sabine Marcelis has introduced her signature minimal and elegant approach to design into Mathmos’ classic 1963 Astro lava lamp. She has used white and one soft matt colour to give the product a fresh, contemporary feel. The metal base and cap are painted matt white; the bottle is frosted to soften and blur the yellow lava moving within. Her box is matt white, and a white fabric cable completes the design; this is a calm and beautiful piece to live with or collect. Sabine Marcelis is a designer known for experimenting with materials, light and colour to achieve her distinct aesthetic. A limited edition Astro lava lamp collaboration with celebrated designer Studio Job led by Job Smeets. A strictly limited run of 600 pieces worldwide, this customised Astro has a gold anodised finish etched with Studio Job’s signature “Perished” pattern and the Studio Job brand on the cap. The bottle has a gold coating on the top and bottom, fading out in the middle to reveal the red lava. The lead is made of red fabric with a translucent plug and switch. The unique box features the same patterning and makes a wonderful presentation for this unique, handmade, collectable version of Mathmos’ classic 1963 Astro lava lamp.
